We Love Our Volunteers

April has been designated national volunteer month in 2010. We are encouraged to recognize and thank our volunteers and hopefully encourage others to be volunteers as well. Volunteerism has been the lifeblood of Camp Michigamme since the very beginning. Camp Michigamme has been changing lives since 1922 and it couldn't be done without you. Volunteerism is so very crucial to the work of this camp that I wouldn't want to think about doing this work without our group of committed, involved friends who are so passionate about the mission and work of Camp Michigamme.

Our volunteers come from far and wide. We have folks from across the UP, below the bridge, Wisconsin, Illinois and several other locations. They come with a variety of gifts and skills. Some are the “front line” folks who deliver “the product”. These are the counselors, game and activity leaders, health care staff and program leaders. Others work in the background, setting the stage and providing a foundation from which the front line folks can do their work. These are the painters, cleaners, wood choppers, curtain makers, window washers, mechanics carpenters, electricians, camp recruiters (in the local churches), and building demolition “experts”. All come, however, with a love and passion for the mission of the camp, that being, making disciples for Christ.

It takes a small army of folk to get this all done. So, don't be surprised to see a series of appeals over the next weeks encouraging you to help us find those folks who can help us “get er done”.

Here's a short list to start with:

· One or two drywall helpers to join a group from Menominee coming to camp on April 17 to hang drywall in the Norway cabin. Call or write for more info.

· Painters to come in the weeks following the drywall crew to paint the interior at Norway.  They should have enough painting skills to do both priming and finish painting.

· Painters, to help prep the back side of log siding for installation on Norway cabin.

· Carpenters to build deck and steps at Norway cabin.

· Cleaners to help during the 2nd and 3rd weekends of May to help do cabin cleanup.

· Yard workers to clear leaves and brush from around buildings. Can be done at the same time as clean up crews.

While we often think of weekends as the time to carry on these projects, however, we can host volunteer groups mid week as well. In fact, some of the Norway projects can be done even as winter fades away (we hope).

Contact the camp if you have questions or to schedule a work session.

We're looking forward to seeing you at camp soon.
