Another great Camp Michigamme Day has come and gone. Some say it was the best ever. It’s hard to guess how many were present. I know Grace Hall was packed for the auction and the pace was too frantic to get an accurate count. There were many present who had never been to a CMD before; some weren’t even United Methodists, but we welcomed them, all the same. Auctioneer Charlie Fosdick (Engadine UMC) was entertaining and did a great job of “pushing” the merchandise. The result of the auction, offering and food donations was a fantastic, free-and-clear $5,235.35 for Camp Michigamme!
Worship service attendance was approximately 150, all of whom were energized by the singing and dancing of 30 kids, the combined members of after-school programs at Paradise and Engadine UMCs, known as the Kids Club and All-Stars, respectively.
String Challenged, the trio-turned-quartet of vocalists and instrumentalist from Gwinn UMC, also inspired us with their talent and virtuosity.
Rev. Duane Miller, superintendent of the Detroit East District, brought us a stimulating account in words and pictures of our connection with the people and church in Liberia. As the chief emissary of the covenant relationship between the Detroit Conference and the United Methodist Church in Liberia, Pastor Duane led three volunteer-in-mission trips to that war-torn, rebuilding nation and brought us a vivid description of grateful, God-loving people whose faith flourishes despite great adversity.
The entire weekend rocked! That was largely due to the energy of the Kids Club and All-Stars who arrived on Saturday and spent the weekend doing typical camp stuff, hiking, crafts, games, campfire singing and ‘Smores, etc. For most, it was their first encounter with church camp, and most departed Sunday evening vowing that they would be back!
Many other folks deserve recognition for their part in the weekend’s success. Among them: Jim Daly and the members of the Camp Michigamme staff; Carrie Lou Thomas (hymn-sing leader and pianist); Laurie delaGarza (liturgist); the members of the auction organizing committee and their helpers; the Paradise-Engadine after-school leaders, Sue Anway and Susan Fosdick, and their helpers; and many, many others who may go unnamed but will surely get their reward in heaven!

Other suggestions are antiques, gift baskets, art work, quilts, baked goods, gift cards, or craft items. Items can be dropped off at camp or persons can contact Jill Lindenberg at 906-475-9337 to arrange transportation of their items. For any churches between Mackinaw City & the camp, the Lindenbergs will be returning from Annual Conference on May 23 or May 24 and are willing to pick up items at a central location. Contact Jill Lindenberg.
Special music was provided by the combined after-school groups from Paradise UMC (Kids’ Club) and Engadine UMC (All-Stars). Also by “String Challenged,” the gospel-blue grass instrumental and vocal trio from Gwinn UMC.

Worship service message by Rev. Duane Miller, formerly a pastor at Gwinn and Ishpeming Salisbury UMCs and currently serving as district superintendent of the Detroit East District. His ministry has taken him to various parts of the world including Europe, Korea, Central America, and Africa. Most recently he has taken part in VIM trips to Liberia. He has become a leading proponent of the Detroit Annual Conference covenant relationship with the UM Church of Liberia. He delivered a message with slides entitled, “The Children of Liberia.”
